Judy enjoys sharing her love of music with her grandchildren and her students. Besides piano, she also plays woodwind instruments and the organ.

When Judy McClure descends to 1,000 feet and the plane she is piloting cuts through the white clouds, she can’t help but marvel at the beauty of the St. Cloud area below and think to herself how blessed her life has been here. “There’s a special feeling I get when I fly,” Judy says. “For me, it’s an incomparable high that is almost spiritual. It helps me view my life from a unique perspective.” Judy was only 12 when her father took her on her first flight. That initial exposure to the world above led her to hold onto a dream that she would realize years later. Now, as an accomplished pilot, she enjoys her volunteer work with the Civil Air Patrol both when flying their aircraft and when helping train the youth involved with the cadet squadron. Although her accomplishments in the air are many, it’s her impressive endeavors on land that have really soared.

A Rhapsody in Blue
This multifaceted woman is a study in self-motivation whose positive attitude first took flight in her youth. “My mother had an encouraging influence on my direction,” Judy says. “Mom told me that if I did things to the best of my ability, I’d always be satisfied with the results.” Taking those words to heart, Judy became an achiever who studied music to the hilt. By the mere age of 15, she took her first job as a piano accompanist for a dance school. At 16, she committed Gershwin’s beautiful, but complex, Rhapsody in Blue to memory.

Judy’s hard work and dedication to musical achievement spanned from third grade to graduation from the Joliet Conservatory of Music, and included concert and marching bands, pep band, jazz band and choir, to name a few. Graced with Judy’s talent, her high school band won a national competition, performed in New York City for the premier of Music Man and won a 10-day trip to Philadelphia to appear on American Bandstand, which then culminated in Washington D.C. at the White House Rose Garden. “It was an exciting reward for all our commitment to excellence,” she says. Since those years, giving her best effort has become a way of life for her.

Her Dreams Soar
When Judy followed her dream to learn to fly, her usual dedication followed her to flight school. In ’75, she earned her private pilot’s license and later qualified to pilot multi-engine aircraft. As an active member of the Civil Air Patrol, a volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, Judy is involved in numerous activities ranging from cadet training and testing to search and rescue missions, fire and flood patrols and more.
